Unique and Historic Apartment
The Near North apartment building is a historical site in Champaign that offers a quiet, sophisticated, and elegant living space conveniently located within walking distance of both campus and downtown. Recently refurbished in 2011 this building perfectly marries the historical architecture and rich history with a modern-day design, green technology, and energy-efficient components.
History of the Building
Built in 1901, what is now the Near North apartment building was once the largest medical center in downstate Illinois. Famed Dr. Haley treated breathing disorders and tuberculous using aqua therapy in the building and also had his own living quarters on the first floor. Back when Dr. Haley occupied the building, what is now the parking lot was the first and only pool in Champaign County. Being 30-40 years before antibiotics, the hospital was only marginally successful causing it to close and the building to be sold in 1910.
Over the next five to six decades, the building would house many different functions including a factory, a hospital again, and then a hotel- which was known to house a few notorious historical figures.
In 1969 the Wrightman family bought the building and made it the first Asian American grocery store in Champaign which operated on the first floor. While the grocery store occupied the entire first floor, a hotel operated on the second, and they made the third floor their living quarters. Once other stores started carrying ethnic foods they transitioned to a flower shop, and then sold the building in 2010 for it to be refurbished and become what is now the luxury apartment building- Near North.
Upgraded Apartment Features
The nine-unit apartment building features two-bedroom suites with a kitchen, living area, and full bath. The apartment gives a modern industrial feel with 11′ ceilings, hardwood floors in the shared living spaces, custom lighting, and exposed steel spiral ductwork.
Units can come furnished or unfurnished. Furnished units feature a stylish living room set, full-size bed, and dresser.
Modern-day technology has been built in with each unit having a dedicated line for gigabit fiber optic internet as well as a video intercom to buzz in guests. Each unit holds its own Energy Star appliances and upgraded mechanicals including a washer and dryer, upgraded heating and cooling system, dishwasher and disposal, and hot water heater. The building also has its own parking lot.
Great Champaign Location
Very conveniently located, Near North is on five CU MTD bus routes, only three blocks from the Beckman Institute and the Engineering campus and Downtown Champaign, and only 2.5 blocks from the County Market grocery store.
